About Girl Guiding
Girl Guiding UK is made up of several sections for different age groups. These change from area to area according to the number of volunteers who are willing to run each section and the number of girls who are interested in joining (click the coloured trefoil for each section's website):
Rainbows, the youngest members of Girl Guiding, they were first created in 1987. Rainbows are 5 - 7 years old and have their own red uniform, promise and songs.
Brownies are girls aged 7 - 10 years old. Brownies first started in 1914 and were called Rosebuds. The name comes from the story "The Brownies" by Juliana Horatia Ewing, written in 1870. In the story two children, Tommy and Betty, learn that children can be helpful Brownies or lazy boggarts. Our unit started 4th January 1919.
Guides are girls aged 10 - 14 years old. 1st Alexandra Park Guide unit re-opened in September 2007 and is going from strength to strength thanks to Tats and Chris.
Senior Section. In the Senior Section, young women agees 14 - 25 participate in a fun and flexible programme known as Look Wider. The programme is also linked to a variety of recognised qualifications or awards, both within and outside guiding. Our local senior section re-opened in 2008.
